Thursday 4th Oct FA Youth Cup Saffron Walden Town 2 v 0 Great Wakering Rovers

Saffron Walden Town U18s progressed into the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup after a well fought 2-0 home win against Great Wakering Rovers U18s, playing at Catons Lane on Thursday evening. The young bloods continued with their philosophy of giving local youngsters their chance in this prestigious competition, as they included 6 year 11 players in their squad. They also welcomed back goalkeeper Josh Bates from injury, after a month on the side-lines. The early exchanges were fairly even as both teams moved the ball well looking to create chances to score. It was the home team who opened the scoring after 29 minutes, when Sam Pinkney slotted home from close range after good work by Anton Thomas. Great Wakering pressed hard to find an equaliser but found the young bloods defence in fine form and when they did get through the home keeper was repelling anything that came his way. Walden’s determination to keep a clear sheet was epitomised by some brave defending as time and time again they put their bodies on the line to deny their visitors the chance to shoot on goal. Bates pulled off another very important save after 70 minutes and this was shortly followed by the key moment in the game as Walden extended their lead. A quickly taken free kick saw Walden midfielder William Norris unleash a fierce shot from just outside the box, which the Wakering keeper parried and Sak Hassan was on hand to sweep home the rebound, much to the delight of the home fans. For the remainder of the game the home side showed a strong willingness to work hard for each other and some excellent game management stifled their opponents and with Bates in excellent form between the sticks they secured their 3rd consecutive clean sheet in this competition to deservedly win the game. Interviewed after the match Walden U18s skipper Joe Cunning was full of pride and praise for his young team mates for the way they “dug in and got the result” and Joe isn’t worried who they draw in the next round - “on our day we can beat any team, so we’ll take anyone in the next round !”.
